The Barbary Wars were two wars between the fledgling United States and the Barbary States of North Africa, which are modern-day Algeria, Libya and Tunisia. The first war began in 1801 when pirates demanded tribute from merchant ships registered in America. The Second Barbara War was prosecuted in 1815 by President James Madison.
