Fetal alcohol syndrome, or FAS, is a congenital condition which is caused by the excessive alcohol consumption by a mother during her pregnancy. FAS may be characterized by mental retardation, developmental delay, microcephaly, hyperactivity, and impaired growth resulting in short stature.
