Dissociative disorders, named for the fact that they involve a dis-association from or interruption of a person's fundamental waking consciousness, include dissociative identity disorder, which used to be known as multiple personality disorder. Dissociative disorders are believed to stem from trauma, with the subject literally dissociating himself from situations which are too traumatic to integrate into his conscious self.
