AIDS, short for acquired immune deficiency syndrome is a disease which shuts down the human immune system. It is caused by HIV, which is short for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is transmitted from person to person via bodily fluids. The two can be referred to separately but are often lumped together as HIV/AIDS.
