Autism is a neural development disorder which is characterized by impaired communication and social interaction and frequently manifests itself with repetitive behavior. The disorder alters how nerve cells and synapses organize and connect and thus affects how information is processed by the brain. Along with Asperger syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified, it is a disorder within the autism spectrum.
