Zen, a school of Mahāyāna Buddhism, gets its name from the Chinese word "Chán," which is itself from the Sanscrit word which is translated as "meditation." Zen seeks to attain enlightenment and emphasizes experiential wisdom in that quest, rather than theoretical knowledge.
