Mahāyāna is one of the two main branches of Buddhism, and it originated in India. It spread to China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, Nepal, Mongolia, and Bhutan and is the parent of major traditions including Zen, Pure Land, Nichiren, Tendai, Shingon, and Tibetan Buddhism.
