The Lutheran church is derived from the theology of Martin Luther, the German reformer pools is credited with launching the Protestant Reformation. The name Lutheran began as a pejorative term used against Luther and his followers, who were considered heretics. Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church because of his disagreement over the doctrine of justification which he and Lutherans consider to be by grace alone through faith because of Christ alone.
