The Congregational Church arose from the nonconformist religious movement during the Puritan Reformation of the Church of England. The denomination proliferated in early New England. They emphasize independent local control and were significant in reform movements involving abolitionism and women's suffrage. Today, the Congregational churches are split into three bodies.
