The Church of England is the official Christian church in England which traces its formal history back to St. Augustine of Canterbury in 597. At that time, the English church became part of the Roman Catholic Church and were under the authority of the Pope. In 1534, King Henry VIII separated from the Roman Catholic Church over the issue of an annulment the king wanted but the Pope refused to grant.
