John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (January 3, 1892 - September 2, 1973) was a British author, poet, and professor. He was born in South Africa to a father who died when JRR was only three and a father who died when he was only twelve. Aside from the Hobbit books, he wrote numerous children's books, and dozens more were published after his death.
