Suffolk, Virginia is an independent city which is situated in the southeast corner of the Commonwealth. The city takes its name for the home county of Royal Governor William Gooch, which is in England. In 1750, it was designated the county seat of Nansemond County. It was incorporated a town in 1808 and it separated from Nansemond County in 1910, though it remained the county seat until 1972. The colonists originally grew tobacco there, but expanded to general farming. Planters Peanuts started business there in 1912, using peanuts grown from around the area.
