The independent city of Lynchburg, Virginia was settled in 1757 and named after its founder, John Lynch, who started the ferry service between New London over the James River at the age of 17. It was notably the only major city in the state which did not fall to the Union in the War Between the States, due to a ruse by which the townspeople convinced the Union Army that the town was much larger than it was.
