Iqaluit, the territorial capital of Nunavut is also the largest community in that territory. Situated on the southern coast of Baffin Island, at the head of Frobisher Bay, it was called Forbisher Bay until 1987. It was founded as an American airbase in during World War II, and the Americans finally left in 1963.
