Nanaimo, a city on Vancouver Island in Canada’s British Columbia, began its life as a trading post in the early 1800s. Upon discovering that there was coal in the area, the Hudson’s Bay Company built a fort which was called Nanaimo Bastion. The city gained international attention in 1887, as a result of the Nanaio mine explosion which killed 150 coal miners.
