The Inquisition is a term that is used to describe any -- or all -- of the components of the Catholic Church’s judicial system which began in the 12th century and was meant to stop heresy and sectarianism. This series of institutional persecutions is also often called the Medieval Inquisition, and it lasted until the mid-19th century. Among the more well-known inquisitions were the Spanish, Portuguese, and Roman Inquisitions.
