When capitalized, the word "holocaust" refers to the genocide which killed more than 11 million Jews, communists, homosexuals, gypsies, Slavs, the mentally and physically disabled, Catholics, and others, including more than a million children. Led by Adolph Hitler, this campaign of murder began in Germany and throughout Europe as Germany occupied one country after another.
