World War I was known during its time as the Great War until World War II took place, at which time it became known as World War I. More than 9 million troops were killed during the war which began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. The world lined up on one of the two sides: the Central Powers, which included Germany and Austro-Hungary; and the Allies, which consisted of, among other nations, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
