Cold War was the term which was used to denote the relationship between the United States and the United Soviet Socialist Republic after the end of World War II. Although there never was a single battle or skirmish, the two countries used proxies to wage war on one another, including the conflict in Vietnam and the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 as well as several wars in South America.
