The era of the railroads and robber barons was most of the 19th century. While railroads crisscrossed the continent, it was 1869 when the first transcontinental railroad was finished. It connected the eastern and western states, meeting in Promontory Summit, Utah, where a golden stake was driven into the railroad in commemoration.
