On December 16, 1811, the first of a series of the most powerful earthquakes in American recorded history hit the eastern United States, centered in New Madrid, which was part of the Louisiana Territory and is now situated in Missouri. The final quake was felt on February 7, 1812. They were so intense that President and Dolley Madison were awakened by them and church bells in Boston, Massachusetts rang.
