The Boer Wars were two wars which pitted the British Empire against two Boer Republics in South Africa. The Boers, who were Dutch residents of South Africa, was a Calvinist colony planted at the Cape of Good Hope in the 1600s. The British acquired the colony during the Napoleonic Wars and wanted control of the Boers, who migrated north and founded two republics: the Transvaal, which was also known as the South African Republic, and the Orange Free State. The British Empire won both wars.
