The Thirty Years' War was actually a series of wars which was fought throughout Europe from 1618-1648. It began as a war over Christianity, with the two sides being Protestant and Catholic. It slowly evolved into a political war, with the sides lining up with either the Habsburgs or the Bourbons. During the war, persecutions of suspected witches became prevalent. At various times, Bavaria, Saxony, Sweden, France, England, Spain, the Dutch, and the Vatican were involved in the war.
