Nicolaus Copernicus (February 19, 1473 - May 24, 1543) was a mathematician and astronomer during the Renaissance. He came up with the heliocentric model of the universe, which is the idea that the sun, not the earth, was at the center of the universe. He was a polyglot who held a doctorate in canon law and was a physician, a scholar of the classics, an economist, and diplomat. He died of what is thought now to have been a stroke.
