Although the term "flu" is used almost generically, the actual flu, shortened from influenza, is a serious disease. Not to be confused with "stomach flu," which is usually gastroenteritis, influenza, the flu is primarily a respiratory illness and frequently leads to both bacterial or viral pneumonia. Every year during flu season, between 3 and 5 million people suffer from flu, and between 250,000 to 500,000 people die from it during non-pandemic years, according to the World Health Organization.
