Conservative Judaism, which is known outside of North America as Masorti Judaism, was begun in the 1850s by intellectual German Jews as a counterweight to Reform Judaism, which is the liberal branch of Judaism. The word conservative was used to convey the belief that Jews should try to conserve the traditions of Judaism instead of reforming or abandoning it.
